Harmony Comes to Hilliard: New Performance/Rehearsal Space Available

Author: dfilas  //  Category: Waiting in the Wings

The Hilliard space formerly known as the Tripleforce Arts Center is under new management as of this past Tuesday, and the hard-working space will be renamed the Harmony Artistic Center.

Harmony Artistic Center Inc. is being registered to operate the Center. Several members of Bread and Circus Theatre Company (instrumental in helping to facilitate the transition and long time residents of the Tripleforce space) will serve on the new board of directors.

Harmony is already developing tenancy agreements with arts groups from all over the area. Spokesperson Howard Carpenter wants to get the word out to the Columbus area theatre community, “We will have performance space, rehearsal space, etc. available to rent at rates significantly lower than downtown, including rates from hourly to monthly to what-have-you. The area is safe, secure, fully handicapped-accessible, modern, clean, and comfortable with plenty of free parking.” Currently, the space includes a large studio and two smaller studios. Plans to add two additional multipurpose studios within the facility are already in the works. The studios are suitable for all performing arts: theatre, dance, music, and more.

Carpenter promises that “early birds get the best dates and rates.” Interested parties should contact Mimi Ninde, facility manager, at 614-270-9956 now. More details to come.

Review Roundup: Theatre Roulette 2009 is at Hand

Jim Azelvandre as Man from Cold Breakfast by Cody Goulde

Jim Azelvandre as Man from Cold Breakfast by Cody Goulde

by Krista Threadgill
Madlab Theatre opened its tenth Theatre Roulette last Thursday night, and the lineup is already impressive.  For the next three weeks, MadLab will be presenting three short plays per night with a different theme each evening.  This year’s Roulette opened with the theme Idle Hands, which includes the short plays Cold BreakfastThe Stand In, and Alien Hand Syndrome.

Cody Goulder’s play Cold Breakfast is about a man (Jim Azelvandre) desperately trying to connect with his family.  Unfortunately for the man, his family consists of a trio of mannequins.  Wife, daughter, and son sit immobile while the man makes every attempt to be an involved husband and father over the breakfast table.  Azelvandre’s performance is literally breathtaking—at the dramatic climax of the play, the entire theatre was completely silent as the audience held its breath during his furious outburst, skirting along the brink of madness.  In twenty short minutes, he shows the entire range of emotion from pleasant affability to frustrated anger to apologetic contrition.  Nikki Smith directed the production, and her choices for blocking and staging were ideal to illustrate a man completely at odds with his imaginary family.

The next production in the Roulette line-up is The Stand In by Brett Hursey, and the mood changes completely.  In this play, Mandy (Erin Prosser)—a small-town girl from the Midwest—is auditioning for “Big City” director Mr. Booker (John Kuhn).  What she does not realize is that she will be acting alongside the multi-talented Xocko (Tay Dreher), famous for his performances in a number of high-art productions.  Prosser’s Mandy is delightful as she vies for the director’s attention.  Her character’s understandable irritation becomes apparent as Dreher’s Xocko steals every scene.  Kuhn does a great job as the harried, star-struck director.  Peter Graybeal directed this uproarious romp through the battle between the Big Star and the Up-and-Comer.

The Roulette closes out the evening with Michael Erickson’s Alien Hand Syndrome in which Mark (Andy Batt) is afflicted with a strange disorder:  his right hand has begun to act completely of its own volition.  Through the actions of his right hand, Mark insults his boss, Mr. Smalls (Stephen Woolsey), which in turn causes him to lose his job.  He also attracts the romantic interest of Emily (Erin Prosser) though he begins to question if she is really attracted to him or to his rogue right hand.  Unfortunately, Mark’s physician, Dr. Carmody (also played by Stephen Woolsey) has little real encouragement to offer.  Batt’s role requires a great deal of physical slapstick comedy, and he delivers flawlessly.  Prosser convincingly showers the “alien hand” with love and affection.  Woolsey’s double role as the blustering boss and unconcerned physician are played with deadpan humor to great success.  Jim Azelvandre’s direction is spot-on as the cast illustrates the consequences of losing control.

MadLab’s Idle Hands production is the perfect example of why this company has made their Roulette a tradition for the last decade.

MadLab’s Theatre Roulette 2009 is showing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. at 105 N. Grant Avenue.  Idle Hands will reprise on May 8, 16, and 21.  On May 23, all of this season’s Roulette plays will be performed, starting at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students/seniors, and $6 for MadLab members.  For reservations, visit the MadLab website or call 614-221-5418.

Weekend Watch List

Author: dfilas  //  Category: Waiting in the Wings

This weekend offers a theatrical buffet for Central Ohio audiences.  Not only can you still catch Cliffhanger at Emerald City Players (see review) and Rosebriar’s From Russia With Love (see review), but you can sample everything from psychodrama (Equus with Olympic Theatre Company) to psychedelics (Reefer Madness with Center Stage Players) and from supernatural (Equal Chances at New Harvest Cafe & Arts Complex) to Shakespeare (As You Like It with Columbus Civic).

Of course, we at Theatre Vault want to encourage you to get out there and support our local theatres.  (Check out our Columbus Theatre Calendar in the upper right corner of this page for full listings and reservation info.)  We also want to alert you when great tours come through town.  In that vein, please make time to go check out The Improvised Musical brought to town by Chicago’s iO (formerly Improv Olympic) on Saturday at Southern Theatre as presented by CAPA.

iO boasts an impressive list of alums, many of the performers immigrated from Second City to get in on the long form action.  Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Neil Flynn, and Rachel Dratch are just a few of the more famous talents to have trod the boards at iO’s rustic Wrigleyville space before hitting it big.  iO, often the overlooked improvisational force in Chicago because of Second City’s monolithic influence and national reputation, serves up a different type of improv.

Whereas Second City (and most other “Chicago style” improv groups) gravitate toward short scenes- either improv games or sketch comedy derived from improv- iO works more exclusively in “long form” improvisation.  Created by improv greats Del Close and Charna Halpern, long form improv usually lasts for 30 minutes or more and consists of several interrelated scenes developed from initial audience suggestions.  ”The Harold”- as the form is known in improv circles- follows a fairly regular pattern (check out this article for the particulars), and the best Harolds manage to tie up and merge the many ideas and characters invented in the previous scenes.  The Improvised Musical utilizes the long form structure of a Harold, and the players must invent a cohesive musical.  What will the musical be about?  That’s up to the audience.

Check out iO for one night and one night only!  Sat, May 2, 8pm at Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St., Columbus, OH.  Call 614-469-0939 or www.ticketmaster.com for reservations and for more information.
